Built in mud by Mudduraja in the 1680s and rebuilt in stone under Tipu Sultan, Madikeri Fort crowns the town centre. Inside the walls: the old palace (now district offices), a small museum in St. Mark's chapel, two stone elephants and rampart walks over the town's rooftops.
